Financial capability workers (FCWs) provide information, money management skills, and support to assist clients make informed financial decisions to strengthen their financial resilience. FCW’s have an important role in assisting people in the community access tools and skills for money management and are skilled in delivering community education workshops in financial literacy. FCW’s work closely with the financial counselling sector providing warm referrals and support advocacy for change. Their services are free, confidential and independent.
All workers who deliver financial capability services in Queensland are required to have an equivalent or higher qualification of a Certificate III in Community Services Work and complete the Financial Literacy Skill Set units:
CHCEDU005: Work with clients to identify financial literacy education needs
CHCEDU006: Improve clients’ fundamental financial literacy skills
CHCEDU007: Provide group education on consumer credit and debt.
Please note, agencies may use different position titles to capture similar roles. This includes positions like financial resilience workers, financial coaches, financial first aid workers, emergency relief assessors or financial crisis workers.
Regardless of position title, financial capability workers are not financial counsellors and cannot provide advice and represent the client in disputes about credit, negotiate payment arrangements for credit cards, personal loans and mortgages, provide advice about bankruptcy, superannuation or insurance products, state or give the impression that they are a financial counsellor.
